MODERNIST
PARTERRE (AFTER JUAN GRIS)
I was asked to design this small triangular-shaped sloping
site situated next to the house.
The clients have a particular interest in art so I took as
a source of inspiration the French gardens of the 1920's (such
as Villa Noailles). The modernist Parterre (after Juan Gris)
as a visual construct, consists of a triangular area with
repeated triangular shaped yew blocks enclosing an area divided
into rectangular spaces with a central tree as a focal point.
Some rectangles are planted with a restricted plant palette,
others are laid with aggregate, The parterre can be viewed
from the first floor of the house. The brightly coloured blocks
of planting are also viewed as a pattern or cubist painting
from a distant small country road.
